How to Get Your Actionable Article to Trend on Medium (Updated)

By Bill Acholla June 5, 2017

There’re a lot of information out there on how to make your content go viral on medium, but personally, I wanted to interview experts who’ve written viral content on Medium to share their tips and strategies.

So, I decided to interview bloggers to share their tips and I asked them a simple question:

How do you get your article trending on medium?

And their responses were truly actionable.

If you’re looking for some practical strategies that you can use to get your article to trend on medium, then you’ll love this interview.

A Quick Update

From the interview I learned that:

  • Writing awesome quality content
  • Having quantity of recommends within 1 hour
  • Posting your article in a highly reputable publication

Play a huge role in getting your article to trend on medium.

So, lets dive right in…

In order for Medium to feature your content, you need to consider what factors it looks for to determine what content is best.

Two of the factors they look for are read time and the quantity of recommends relative to the time it’s been live. To meet the former, write a great article that keeps people reading from top to bottom.

To meet the latter, share your articles to your email list and on your social channels after you publish and ask your network to do the same.

As with anything viral, there’s no set formula as such, but there are things you can do to increase your chances.

Great content (including an awesome title) that gives a lot of value is a must. Work on developing your following on Medium.

Share the content after publication across all your channels. Do outreach just as you would for a post on your own blog.

And finally, publish regularly – the more you publish, the better chance you have.

Publication. Publication and publication. The key to getting your article trending on Medium is having your post in a highly reputable publication.

Most people would give up if they don’t hear anything back from the publication owners and that was a mistake I made early on with Medium.

You need to be persistence at reaching out to the publication owners via Twitter, email and even Facebook.

Of course getting your post in a highly reputable publication is only the tip of the iceberg for being viral on Medium.

I recommend you to ask people you admire for input and feedback on your post while at draft. Medium then adds their name at the bottom of the post when published.

Then I’d reach out to newsletters within your industry and tell them why their audience would benefit from your writing.

Either way, continue trying and learn from each try. This will take time.

First and foremost, make sure you get your work featured on a “publication.” Publications have large groups of followers and your blog posts will get more traction if you feature your work on one instead of just publishing to your account. Think of it almost as a guest post within Medium itself.

Second, focus on gaining momentum with Medium. In the beginning, your posts won’t get a ton of views. If you keep posting on Medium frequently (through publications) your follower count will increase and your subsequent posts will get more attention. Most bloggers fail on Medium because they give up on it after a few posts. Be patient.

Third, be yourself. Medium readers have a keen nose for bullshit and insincerity. They appreciate content that comes from a place of realness. If you’re a die-hard marketer at heart, write that way. If you’re more artsy, write that way. Just don’t try to be someone you’re not, because they’ll be able to tell.

Trending on Medium is just like trending on any platform. You need quality and quantity.

You need to write a high quality piece in order to keep people reading and drive enough traffic to the article to make it relevant. 20% of time should be spent on content creation. 10% should be optimization. And the last 70% is promotion.

One shouldn’t just drive traffic to a piece. You need to understand when and how much traffic you will need to make a piece trend.

It is important to get as much traffic and recommendation within the first hour of publishing.

You will need to time all your promotions when your community is most active. Once you make the list, you will gain a lot more organic traffic which will help you climb up the chart.

Once you make the list, slow down the promotion. You don’t want to send too much traffic, because when you are already at the top of the list, extra traffic will be wasted.

Wait until you drop a rank, then send more traffic to keep your post on the trending list as long as possible.

Don’t forget internal linking! Link to relevant articles within your post. It is a great way to send traffic to other posts and have multiple trending posts at the same time.

Medium, just like every other platform is super crowded. People will probably not see your first post of the week. Or your second, third or fourth post.

But chances are that they’re going to see one of them if you post 7 times a week. Social media is a number’s game. No matter how good your content might be…

Finally, if you want more people to read your medium content, then you need to actively promote your medium post.
