By Suzana Joel July 28, 2017

As a business owner, your local online presence is of paramount importance in the present day. It is a simple strategy that can take your business a long way.

Ranking on SERPs (Search Engine Results Page) when consumers are looking for businesses that offer your services can bring in sales and subsequently lead to making profits.

Now you’re probably wondering where you can find a professional SEO expert to get your business ranking. But here’s a not-so-secretive-secret: You can do it yourself!

Why you need to have some local SEO strategies in place:

a. Your customers are making decisions based on the information they find online that influences their purchase decisions. In other words, your business can make more sales when it appears on search engine results.

b. Your competitors are out there already, reaping the benefits.

c. If your business is performing well with its physical storefront, you need to make sure everyone else knows about your first-class services online as well.

d. The biggest takeaway is that you get absolutely free advertising and promotion. You are losing out on great visibility opportunities without an online presence.

e. One word with two syllables that can create a huge impact on your business: Reviews! A mere star rating will give consumers the chance to choose the right services from a set of options. Imagine the increase in the lead numbers that you can see if your business has a five-star rating!

Given the perks, here are some super effective SEO strategies you can implement by yourself to get your business ranking online.

SEO Optimized Websites

When you talk about search engine optimization, the first thing you think of is placing a (desired) keyword around a blog article to get it to rank on a search engine.

Optimizing your website will be far more lucrative for your business. You’re probably thinking, “How do you do that?”

What you need to focus on is the anatomy of your website, and optimizing parts of it that will allow search engines to understand that your website is the best match for search queries.

But of course, it’s easier said than done. But the effects of this is long term.

Here’s  the TL;DR:

a. Your Title Tag MUST have your keyword!
b. Your URL stubs must be concise, straightforward and easy-to-understand.
c. Your website content must be original.
d. Your business information must be included in your website.

Local Citations and Online Directories

An extremely easy SEO strategy is to make sure that your business is listed on all online directories that are specific to your niche.

This is basically creating a business profile on directories like Yelp, Yellow Pages, and your local Chamber of Commerce website.

This will contribute to your online presence and consumers will be able to find you online.

Near Me Searches

Optimizing your business for Near Me searches can serve to be very valuable. So, what are Near Me searches? Near Me is a query interpreted as a ‘location by intent’ search that is matched to a user’s current location.

If you put yourself in the average consumer’s shoes, you’ll see that they want accurate but convenient information about their searches.

For example, if someone searches for restaurants that serve sushi, they want results that are in close proximity to their location rather than restaurants that are perhaps the best in the city.

Near Me searches are a result of people going mobile with local searches that Google and Apple’s Spotlight Search picked up on. Some ways where you can optimize your business for Near Me Searches are:

  • Having a well-kempt Google My Business and Google Maps page
  • Maintaining good reviews
  • Super accurate NAP details updated on your business’ Google account
  • Location-targeted ad campaigns on sites like Google, Facebook, etc.
  • Backlinks with city in anchor text

This move will help you simplify your search engine optimization for Google.

You can integrate it with Google Maps and appear on “Near Me” searches, and get an upper hand on reviews with Google Reviews itself and integrate your reviews from other sites like Facebook, Foursquare, Yelp, etc.

Getting on board Google My Business is simple. You simply need to add your business information, claim/verify it and optimize it with NAP details that your customer will be looking for.

If you think about it, online customer reviews are like super fuel that helps your business scale-up faster. Moz states that 67% of consumers make purchase decisions based on online reviews.

There are several review management tools you can use to get reviews and manage them.

As present SEO strategies go, mobile SEO serves a good competitive advantage. Just think of the convenience that comes with the ubiquity of mobile devices and a decent internet connection.

Banking on this, in 2015, Google released an algorithm that estimated “mobile-responsiveness” as a ranking factor.

The key factor that contributes to mobile-responsiveness is page-speed, that is, your site needs to load in an average time of two-three seconds. Ideally, you need to make sure that your website:

  • Eliminates render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in the above-the-fold content.
  • Minify CSS
  • Optimize your images such that they don’t affect load time.
  • Enable compression.

This can help you leverage a mobile-friendly site. You can use Google’s PageSpeed Insights to fix your pagespeed, or even use Google’s Mobile-Friendly Websites Test to enhance your website accordingly.

You can even power your website with Google’s AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages), which according to Google can load “four times faster, and use ten times less data than the equivalent non-amp’d result.”

    Hey Bill,

    Great post here.

Near Me Searches is something I’ve been reading up a lot about and trying to implement in my SEO strategy actually. It’s proving difficult to actually use it effectively, but I’m keeping it in mind.

Regarding Barnacle SEO, I guess the only way I’m effectively using it is through guest posting. I’m very unclear about writing sponsered content because I’m not 100% sure Google accepts that. In a sense, it’s basically paying for a link.

    Very good post otherwise.
